Salamanca, New York
Built in 1900, the property was purchased by Doctors John Henderson and Carroll Perry and opened in 1906 as an osteopathic sanitarium and bathhouse. At the time, it was promoted as New York’s first and only institution devoted to osteopathic treatment, offering a form of care centered on physical manipulation, bathing and other noninvasive therapies.
In 1923, the building became a tuberculosis clinic as the region responded to one of the era’s most serious public-health threats. It was later adapted into apartments before eventually becoming the preserved historic property known today as Wildwood Sanitarium.
