CEMETERY

Barnstable, Massachusetts

Reported Activity

COBB’S HILL CEMETERY

Visitors and local ghost-tour guides have described unexplained voices, feelings of being watched and unusual sensations of being drawn toward particular graves.

THE CASE

The cemetery, also known as Cobb’s Hill East and West, sits beside the Unitarian Church on Route 6A. The oldest recorded burial is John Gorham, who died in 1715, and the older section was apparently laid out around the time the town’s second parish meetinghouse was established, around 1717. Many of Barnstable’s early families—including the Cobbs, Bacons, Gormhams, Sturgises, Dimmocks and Thachers—are represented among the graves.

As for the paranormal reputation, Cobb’s Hill has been described by local ghost-tour guides as “one of the most actively haunted cemeteries on Cape Cod.” Visitors have reported strange sensations, unexplained voices and feelings of being watched or pulled toward particular graves. One visitor described feeling as though something was pulling him toward a gravestone, while his wife reportedly felt that her feet had become unusually heavy.

There doesn't appear to be a large body of documented evidence for specific apparitions at Cobb’s Hill. Much of its paranormal reputation comes from personal experiences reported during ghost tours and investigations. Despite that, we appear to have added more to the stories, except with some documentation.
